A security breach has been reported at one of the biggest email service providers worldwide, Mailchimp. This incident affected 132 services across their platform – and many of them are now facing serious repercussions due to this data breach.
The same issue occurred with Statista users, who have also had their data compromised as part of this incident (incl. name and email address). Fortunately, the unauthorized actor exposed no password information during this attack on Mailchimp servers; however, Data Protection Authorities have still been informed by both parties regarding potential risks associated with these types of breaches from now on.
Friedrich Schwandt, Statista’s CEO, wrote an email to all users, saying: “Please note that we have informed the data protection authorities and confirmed with our partners over at MailChimp that our account is secure following all security best practices… For operational security reasons, they [MailChim] cannot release any public comments or statements about actions taken but rest assured we’re doing everything in our power here!”
What can consumers do if they think they may be impacted?
In short – stay vigilant! As always, it should go without saying that you should never click on suspicious links or download unknown attachments sent via emails, especially those claiming there’s some kind of offer awaiting you. It could very well be someone trying to take advantage of your personal details, which were leaked during this unfortunate event!
Finally, let us leave you by reminding everyone why it pays dividends when companies emphasize protecting your privacy online. Unfortunately, incidents like these happen far too often nowadays despite most corporate entities doing everything possible to prevent them from happening. Please remember it’s just as important for you to take the steps necessary to protect yourself online too!
